The train goes under the water like a boat out on the sea
It carries me away, out of this city
Up into the green

He had a terrible father with his jaw clenched up
And they all learned to fear him
And they packed up their hearts and I couldn't open it

No matter where I go, I'm thinking of where I've been
It's making me lonesome

My own father taught me about the heart and the mind
He said, it's all the same thing
And the light through the window of something that's moving
Will make your heart sing
It made his heart sing
It's better than anything

My mother, she drove us all the way to California
And back up into the snow
We kept on picking up and we kept on moving
So I grew up like a beach rose
All up and down the coast
